We Got Stoned Last Week [a resurrected life recap]

So, I love writing.  Even when I’m not in a place to post I’ll frequently spew out a draft and either save it or delete it – it’s cathartic for me.  And then sometimes, I write full posts and completely forget that it ever happened — like I did with the below post that I apparently wrote last week.  I wrote it last Wednesday right after the ER trauma, and right before our training for b:core, and while part of me thought maybe I should hit delete and leave it in the past….I’m going to honor the dear diary moment that it was since it leads directly into my upcoming recap of training, the methodology, and what I’m now referring to as the wonder team because they’re all so freaking amazing.

So here it is….

Seriously, but not seriously, we got stoned this week — kidney stoned (or Dar did)– and it was not cool.  It was not cool because it’s never cool to get severe pain in your kidneys, or to throw up your whole life in front of your dog, or to have to take a not-so-joy ride in an ambulance because you can’t walk or move.  Those things are mostly not cool for the person going through the actual ‘pain’ process, but it’s also not cool to be the person calling 911, exhausted enough to start wondering if their questions about ebola might actually be relevant to the situation (has Dar been in close contact with animal blood from West Africa recently? I don’t know! Maybe?); or did it just sound too appealing to have a root cause for why the person keeled over next to you seems to believe there is an alien trying to escape their abdomen.  I mean, I guess there are just some things we will never know?

Regardless, Monday night through most of Tuesday is a complete blur, and all of the front loading of work that I had planned kind of evaporated while coping mechanisms took over.  If there was one serious positive about the whole thing it was definitely the reiteration of something that was already pretty understood – we’ve got the best community ever, and our friends are unbelievably awesome.

From quickly picking up classes at MAD to delivering dinner two nights in a row (ehem, Anita) and to the constant check in’s to make sure everything was going smoothly, there was never a lonely moment, and for that I thank you.  I may currently look like a homeless insomniac, but I am chock full of gratitude for all of the sweet people that we are lucky to know.

Today was the first full day back in life and I’m pretty sure while my body completed some overtime (I had actually worked from 2pm-11pm yesterday to make up for my life evaporation), my brain was still on break for the first couple hours of the day.  I finally started to feel less foggy by 10am, and that is exactly when the flood gates all opened.  One million emails? check.  Three somewhat illogical fire drills? mmhmm.  And of course, there was the anxious yet exciting status reports on the next business to join the family, so I was back on all-cylindars digging out.

Tomorrow is going to be epic, and the first of several PTO days that could not be more well spent.  It’s foundation building time, and I could not be more excited about completing that stage.  I’ve got so many updates, so much crazy news, and of course some already stored content to publish when I have the green light to share the final pieces of what feels like an incomplete puzzle at the moment.  All in due time I suppose — but patience never was a virtue of mine.

So, there you have it.  The exhale of some stress, and the inhale of a new experience that has proven to be far better than anything I could have hoped for.  We’re still concealing three big surprises with b:core, but at least the barre piece is out there and our teachers are able to fully realize their own passions, dynamic personal brands, and so much more.

This is just the beginning, and that’s what makes it so much more fun to get up every day and hop right on the grind.

A Celebration of MADness: Charleston Style

Hello, Charleston.  Yep, that’s right, we’re back again, and all in the name of MADness.  We opened the doors to MADabolic Charleston (Mt. Pleasant) in the beginning of June, and this weekend we celebrated the coaches, community, and the complete disbelief that it’s only been 7 weeks.

After an epic Thursday and Friday nights (which I’ll recap later this week) we kicked off the Grand Opening celebration on Saturday with some morning interval action (it.was.brutal.) followed by FREE samples from our friends at modpaleo.

I met Amber and Carter, the creators/owners of Modpaleo, a few years ago – just prior to their meal plan launch- when I started to drop into their morning bootcamp in Charlotte for lululemon.   Like anyone who has pushed hard to eat clean,  they recognized the lack of convenient or easy meal options for those days or weeks when you just don’t have the time to spend hours doing prep work.  Thus modpaleo  was born providing amazing chef prepared paleo meals to their pick up locations (in select cities…).

We are now one of their pick up locations in Charleston, and the only one in Mt. Pleasant, so check them out and place an order! The food is amazing, and the convenience seriously can’t be beat.

After two packed morning classes, and two additional preview classes for new clients, there was just enough time to take a 30 minute nap in between setting up and getting ready to go.

I don’t have all the pictures back from our photographer to really do the whole event justice, but I have to give a huge shout out to the guys from Charleston Choo who catered the event and did an amazing job.  I absolutely loved all the food, and they went beyond what I was even envisioning with the house made dressings and original recipes to fit our locally-sourced and more farm-to-table requests.

Our friends from King of Pops were also there to round out the catering with their sweet treats and signature pops.

The party was awesome, and a great celebration of our community.  And let’s not forget our awesome founding team of coaches, all of whom made this community (and stream of photos) as ridiculous and fun as it is strong.

[Foam] Rolling Through Another Cville Weekend

On Tuesday afternoon I thought that this week may never end, but now, as we get ready to turn the page to what then was ‘next week’, I’m realizing that I’m already behind on tomorrow.

We’ve already ‘rolled’ through our Foam Rolling Clinic with Airrosti at MADabolic (Charlottesville), and are just under a week out from our Grand Opening Party at MADabolic (Charleston) – which if it’s anything like that community, is going to be incredible all around.  I’m heading back to Charlotte on Tuesday to squeeze a few days in the office before heading to Charleston.   Since I’ll be gone for the rest of the month,  I’ve been packing in every last second of Cville summer life while I can.

There are parts of my split and transient life that I love; the amazing friends, communities, and teams that I get to look forward to seeing in all the Charl-cities that I land in – but it’s the transitions out that are hard.   And of course,  leaving my little love bug behind is the absolute worst (even if she is so pre-occupied with her camp friends and holding down the fort in ‘her office’ at MAD to probably even notice).

After my much needed R&R on Monday, I got back into the MAD intervals on Tuesday and Wednesday, both of which were absolute crushers.  My arms and legs were so sore by Thursday that I had to make a point to walk around my office every 30 or so minutes, standing during conference calls, and finally at 6pm managed to run it out with a slow and steady 5 miles.  Friday was off in preparation for what was a very, very, MAD weekend.

Saturday morning the weekend crew was out in full force with waitlisters on deck to get in to all classes, as well as the Foam Rolling Clinic with Airrosti.  I played coach support and amateur photographer in the 8:30 class, and got to sweat it out in the 9:30.

The Foam Rolling Clinic was led by Page, our favorite Airrosti guru and client, and was so unbelievably needed by all of us – judging from the groans and nauseous looks that were spread across the room.  Our community is so incredibly committed to our intervals and intensity, the clean eating we love to promote, and the strict rules about being on time and doing the full warmup, but its so much less prevalent to see anyone take more than a few quick minutes to really work-out the days work with a little foam roller or lacrosse ball.  And I’m fully open to the reality that I’m probably the worst – over the last year my yoga attendance has decreased by several thousand percent, and stretch class?  I wish.   This is definitely something that I’ll be talking more about (and committing completely to) to give back a little love to my body that I ask so much of.

Today was the first weekend that I’ve been in Charlottesville where I haven’t made it up to at least check in with the classes, but I just needed a morning to sleep, and slowly prepare for the day; long coffee, dog time, and then my favorite home cooked eggs for breakfast.

We had a 1pm kickball game – yes, that’s right, we have a MAD kickball team, made up of just a small sample of our awesome clients, friends, and coaches.

We’re not exactly Championship bound, but we do have a perfect record (it’s all how you look at it …backwards helps), but it’s a great group and a really fun way to sweat a little differently.

After the game I actually hit up MAD to get my sweat in for the day, just a little bit off the grid.  Heading there I wasn’t sure exactly what I was going to do – would it be today’s interval that I missed, or the one coming up for tomorrow?  In the end I decided on my own flashback to college, full out slideboard interval series that I would do with my strength coach as part of my cross-training and rehab when I was injured.  I needed a little break from weights, and it was perfect – details coming in the next couple days on what it all entailed after my Apollo Ono stance was put into action.  I think I missed my calling….but I also think I seriously missed the height cap for that sport, so I’ll settle for just living the dream when I can in the privacy of my own workout.

To wrap up this very incomplete summary of an amazing weekend (including also Sarah Bareilles live at the Pavillion and dinner at Bella’s); here’s the short story of Sunday night dinner, as I love to make it with as many leftovers as I think the week can possibly handle:

All in all, it’s been a crazy-beautiful Charlottesville summer weekend and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  Charlotte, I think I might actually be ready for you this week – and I’m certainly ready for your yoga.

Hello Charleston, Lets Get MAD

Where to begin? I think it was Alice in Wonderland that taught us all that it’s usually best to begin at the beginning, so, I will.

I spent the first half of the week in Charlotte tying up every loose end I could think of, preparing to head down to Charleston by Wednesday.  I had my mobile workstation in tow, and with the help of the coffee/smoothie bar at Whole Foods, I powered through everything on my list (I hope).

By the time Thursday afternoon rolled around and I was officially on PTO, I was so very ready to shut down my mobile work station and take in our new home of the MADness — and the girl was there, awaiting my arrival.

We have been pretty delayed in our buildout which has (and always has) led to some anxiety and discontent in the ranks, but we started to get back on track Thursday and can hopefully set our preview week (FREE class) schedule in the next couple of days.  The bright side of the extra time is that we’ve had full availability to spend more time with our trainers to fine tune their coaching, our methods, and the operational procedures that we’ve developed over time in Charlottesville that can luckily kick off day 1 at this location.

The past 6 days have been constant work, development, learning, and thankfully, training for this whole group.  We don’t hire ‘trainers,’ or ‘fitness professionals,’ because we’re not just a gym with exercise classes (and because both terms are so generic and overused that they’re virtually meaningless at this point).  We’re a training facility, with a focus on training the everyday athlete.   Our target market ranges from the recreational sweater to the elite level athlete, and everyone in between. And as such, we require coaches – real, knowledgable, credible, fit and inspiring coaches – and that requires not only finding the right people, but providing perpetual training, development, and opportunities for them to better reflect and embody the product and lifestyle that we believe in.

I shot the below photo during one of our board talk/interval training segments, and just can’t get past the symbolic nature of the lighting.  This team, and this facility is still living in the shadows: of the hype, of the branding, and of all the unknown that exists outside of these four walls and these 6 coaches.

In the next two weeks the doors are going to open, the classes will begin, and all the bodies that walk in the doors will be experiencing the product (obviously) but more importantly they will experience the community, the structure, and overall energy feed that we aim to deliver.

We’ve been so spoiled with our staff in Charlottesville that it’s unreal.  We have the best coaches we could have hoped for, and they make us better every single day.  They are the energy that our clients’ experiences and that our overall success is derived from.  The staff in Charleston is going to be amazing, and they are ready, but still don’t know what they don’t know — and that’s the most exciting part.  The next month is going to be crazy fast, and before we know it we’ll all be standing at the Grand Opening party with our brand new community, and a full month of new learnings, and a wide open road ahead.  I remember the beginning so vividly in Charlottesville that it’s completely insane to me that it’s almost been a year.

Which brings me to the much needed, never-long-enough, and just plain delightful non-work portion of this ‘vacation.’

I’ll touch back more fully on this later, but we’re staying at the Wild Dunes Resort (I know, cry for me), just for a few days to break up the trip, and it is exactly what I needed.  Sun, beach, pool, and drinks – it was definitely not a bad way to start the weekend.

This morning was another training morning up at the space with a couple hours of coaching discussion and demoing, followed by the same interval that was being done in the other (open) locations this morning…just so no one felt left out.   While it was definitely more of a day of work than a day of rest, it was awesome to sweat with the group and detox from all of the absolutely killer food (+ wine) i’ve been consuming since I got here.  Restaurant reviews are a must, and will definitely not disappoint, since I’m pretty sure I’ve been eating better than anyone on the planet the last few days.

If we weren’t missing our Charlottesville group so much, we might never leave.  But, we are, and I can’t WAIT for the MADrave coming up on June 7th at our Charlottesville space in the IX building, so if you haven’t signed up already, get on it.  I’ll be there, glowing brighter than the sun.

 

It’s All Business: Lessons from Bug & Tank

If there were a canine version of The Godfather I’m pretty sure Bug and Tank would be the main characters.  Beyond their creepy co-dependence with each other and the fact that Tank’s snaggle tooth and collar bling makes him the best mob-style short Italian dude ever, I’m constantly finding animal heads in their beds and strewn about the house.

Last week I had both dogs with me in Charlotte they must have torn through at least two new babies a day.  The mistake was definitely mine because I gave them too many new things up front — by friday the house was full of empty, lifeless carcasses of once fluffy toys.

As tedious as it is to constantly pick loose fluff off the floor (and out of the carpet), I have to respect their spirit.  These dogs have never met a challenge to large, a toy too durable, or anyone impressive enough cause them even the slightest misstep on the way to achieving their goals of destruction.  They’re all business.

Lately I’ve felt like my life is all business as well – transitioning from one job to the other, slowly transforming into that ‘face behind the computer screen.’  All projects and business items are in the ‘build and stand up’ phase, which is actually what I love the most, but with it all converging at the same time work days seem like continuous cycles just broken up into 24 hour phases with short interruptions for food, other obligations, and physical activity when at all possible.  Last week I hit up Flywheel in Charlotte twice to salvage what I could of my cardio endurance, and squeezed some short runs and walks into other available windows.

I could not be more excited for our MAD Charleston location to be open, and for the really fun parts to begin; welcoming new clients, planning the grand opening party, and connecting with the community that has already been creating so much buzz for us.  In Charlottesville we’ve hit a really amazing tipping point with new clients and energy in the space, the MADrave with TruPilates and Opal Yoga coming up in June, and then our 1 year Anniversary party on August 16th.  The things on the horizon are definitely appealing, now is just the business of getting there.

This week Dar is in Charleston to check on the last phases of buildout, work through layout, and stand up some of the major operational pieces, so, in the spirit of keeping all of our bases covered and continuing the momentum across the board, I’m holding it down in Charlottesville working remotely for my (other) job by day and working it ALL out by night.

Last night I got to squeeze in a little more of the fun part — coaching – with packed evening classes (and thank you to Elly for being back up at the Front!).  I’ve only been on the schedule a handful of times in the last couple of months, so it was so fun to return to the floor and experience the energy of the workout on the other end.

Clients that were ‘new’ in the beginning of 2014 are now moving like seasoned veterans of the MADness, and everyone has managed to really engage mentally in the business and intention of the work at hand, without sacrificing the social and charismatic vibe that makes us all want to be there day after day.  In these moments, whether coaching or taking, every hour spent on back office planning and tasks all seem so worthwhile.

Accompanying my return to coaching has been my return to working out, and I’ve managed to squeeze in the Monday and Tuesday intervals.  I’m still in the debating stage of whether today will happen or not, but I’m going to err on the side of it happening since I need something to counterbalance the last three days of absolutely dreary and horrendous rain.  The other way I’ve been fighting the rainy day blues is by getting back into the kitchen.

I’ve also been incorporating more grains into my meals, not every day, and on a moderate scale, but it has changed everything about my energy level.  I’m definitely not a carb fiend, but every once in a while I need it for that recovery — just usually in the form of quinoa, or products made with brown rice.   So, last night, to go with my ground beef, zucchini, and Keswick Gourmet Sauce, I threw in some brown rice fettuccine and tossed it all together.

I’m actually in Charlottesville through the middle of next week, so I’m pretty psyched to hit up the city market this weekend and put together some new local meals that hopefully can be paired with actual spring weather.   But for now, it’s all business, and like Bug and Tank, I’ve got my eye on the end goal.

A Week of ‘All Over the Place,’ Paired with Great Friends

This past week included a little bit of everything.  From a 60-degree Sunday (in Charlotte) to a Wednesday snow storm, and a full-on MAD weekend in Charlottesville.  I’ve been all over the place.

In Charlotte, when my life is a little more spread out, and time spent in transit is about 10 times that of even the busiest days in Charlottesville, my meal preparation (and sanity) really suffers.  The last two weeks were exponentially more challenging thanks to my mid-month move and the slow but steady approach I took to getting settled in.  In my past lives I’ve been the stay-up-all-night to finish organizing person, but these last couple years I have changed gears.  Adding extra anxiety to the loads I carry is not something I’m interested in.

I know this transition is temporary, and pretty soon I will be all settled, but it still wore on me enough to  make even my 4.5 hour drive to Charlottesville feel like sweet relief.

On Wednesday morning before I left Charlotte I crammed in a quick pre-road interval (my favorite, ‘Crowd Pleaser’) at MADabolic CLT.  It was everything I needed (and a little more) after having taken Tuesday off due to impending doom snow.  I made it to Charlottesville just in time to watch the packed 5:30pm class  (filled with some of my favorite people) rock out the same interval.

By Thursday morning I was up and rolling with work (my ‘real’ job) but thanks to the amazing mobility of Charlottesville, was able to get in a great long run and make a pre-birthday dinner to celebrate Dar with her wing woman, Margaret.

fuel sweat grow: salad I love, love, love green salads with berries, nuts, and avocado, so it made a valiant return to the menu.  Toss it in some balsamic and olive oil (maybe add some salt?) and I could eat it all week long.  So, obviously, we had this salad, paired with some of my other favorite grilled items: cauliflower and chicken.

And of course, no birthday is a birthday these days without a celebratory cupcake. Or four.

Not to say that the cupcakes marked the beginning of the end for my clean eating this weekend….but, they were the beginning of the end.

Friday was entirely consumed by two things: work, and Dar’s birthday party.  Even Bug and Tank got dressed up in their Friday best — but those heart stopping photos deserve a post of their own, free from food and fitness.

This weekend I hit up MADabolic Cville both mornings, which left me feeling detoxed and actually quite sore.  Saturday was a welcomed afternoon of nothing, including but not (quite) limited to a trip to Whole Foods to refresh the fridge.  Sunday, post-sweat, I took some time to get myself set for the week before heading across the way to watch the Super Bowl.  As anti-climactic as the game was, it was awesome to wrap up a Sunday with such an awesome group of neighbors and friends.

So in the end, despite the chaos of travel and weather, I managed to find my bearings by the end of the week thanks to just a few short days with great friends.
