Wine, Apples, Brunch + More: #23to30 Days 4 & 5

This weekend brought Day 4&5 of my #23to30 chronicles, and marked a solid October weekend of both amazing friends and the first convincingly crisp fall air.

Day 4 landed on Saturday, and it kicked off with an abrupt wake up call that was the second to last day of cardio week intervals at MAD Cville. Saturdays, when I’m in Charlottesville, typically always involve taking and teaching the interval, and this week was no different.  While there are some moments when I first wake up that I reconsider this scheduling decision, I have to say it’s by far my favorite day of the week with our community, packing classes with clients from all week-day time slots, always adding a fresh dynamic to the morning.

After class, the second week of patronizing Brazo’s Tacos, the new pop-up taco spot in IX (In the Al Dente space) brought both fuel and happiness into my life, perfectly timed right before what turned into a marathon day of errands and chores.

Thankfully the day ended with some much needed wine with a few of my favorite people, a finale that inspired this #23to30 philosophy for the day:

All of these things are absolutely true, and just further support the notion that wine = happiness, and since happiness is the basic goal, wine is the foundation for life and prosperity.

Today, Sunday, brings day 5 of the chronicles, and if it’s possible, was end to end one of the best Sunday’s in a long while.  Wake up, grind out a durability interval at MAD, finally have coffee, eat an amazing brunch at the Guptas (the patron saints of Cherry Hill) and then go apple picking with some of the MAD folks? Yes please.

I’ll have to circle back on the specifics of the day because there are many moments worth sharing, but the main focus was enjoying moments with friends; the beauty that we’re lucky to have in our backyards, and all of the subtle thrills of Charlottesville life.   I could write about this all day, and as much as I want to, I also want to keep to the point —  and that is that sometimes it’s important to just take a break for the people and things that are right in front of you — the ones that give content to your life, everyday.

There’s so much to be so grateful for, and positively overwhelmed with, so take a time to make room and celebrate all of the little things that make up your big happy life.  They add up, and more importantly, so do the relationships, making the difference between simply having a life to having an amazing quality of life….and that deserves a little enthusiasm.

Durable Weekend: Moving, Brunch + Wahoowa

The weekend was an exercise in durability for me, all around, but was sweetly padded with these stems on Friday night from Robin, the lovely owner of Tru Pilates here in Charlottesville.

Little did she know that we were testing her most durable nature Saturday morning at MADabolic (sorry!) with a killer combination of movements packed into our Twice As Nice interval.  [Disclaimer: the ‘Nice’ part of the name is slightly deceptive — just ask Throck (pictured below).]

Immediately following my test of will in the interval, it was time to move yet another 16′ container of all my earthly belongings into the new house.  ON a normal day this would have been tasking, but after my early morning abuse it was absolutely brutal.  By the end of the night I was ready to collapse, and I’m assuming that’s what happened since in retrospect I have zero idea what I even did.

Sunday morning included a stop in at MAD to get a few items in order, and then brunch at Beer Run.  My short review of brunch: it’s possible to eat clean, but the presentation and amount of food is underwhelming at best.

It was well past my normal morning eating time when we got the food, so I ate the whole thing in about two seconds.  I had the snow white omleette [basil, purple onion, cherry tomatoes, spinach, and whole eggs] which really was good — but I could have eaten two for sure.

After brunch I actually made a follow up smoothie with ice, coconut milk, cold brew coffee from Stock, a spoonful of almond butter, banana, a tiny bit of vanilla extract, and a touch of raw cocoa powder for a little kick of flavor.  It was good – SO good.

The rest of the day flew by with some pool time and last, but certainly not least, the UVa v. Ole Miss game in the College World Series – and a crazy walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth.  Seriously, I’m not a fan of the high-anxiety, right-up-to-the-last-out, kind of games, but I agree that it truly adds to the excitement – as long as we win in the end.

Late night stress aside, it was a damn good night for UVa and a great way to kick off another 5-day haul.

 

Babies, Mothers, Sun and Home Cooking

There’s something to be said for weekends of constant motion — the kind that can take you so far out of the day-to-day that you actually get a break from  the routine.  That was this weekend in Charlotte, and as I sit here wrapping up the last few hours before I check in to next week I’m so aware and grateful for the last 48 hours of reprieve.

Saturday morning started with an early walk with a friend, and party preparations for baby shower brunch. In between the chaos of getting the house ready and getting myself ready (I was all kind of messy by that point) I inhaled some eggs scrambled with a left over zucchini, carrot, mushroom, and ground beef sauté.

The shower was beautiful (and the company, amazing) but if you know the party hosts and their combined personalities, this would not be at all surprising.  The party favor is just a mere detail, and adorable at that — OPI nail polish aptly named ‘it’s a girl.’

My typical Saturday morning routine involves working out and spending the greater part of the day in what seems like a spandex uniform so it was a great change of pace to be productive and dressed in real clothes before noon.  The afternoon was spent talking, eating, gifting, and generally appreciating the good company.

In a complimentary and lucky sequence of events, thanks to today being Mother’s Day, the opportunity presented to have yet another great break from reality.  With our Charleston MADabolic location opening soon and more than enough work happening on all fronts, simplicity and ease on a Sunday was exactly what was needed.

I had a few logistical to-do’s to get done in the morning, which happened even more smoothly and easily than I ever could have hoped, and by 1pm I was headed back to Casa Moertel for an afternoon of sun, aka my perfection.

Sunday dinner is kind of my thing, and this weekend proved no different so we brought forth a very clean menu to close out the weekend and get this next week started right.

There was salad with Romaine, tomatoes, cucumbers, avocado, and chopped almonds.  Simple, classic, and exactly what was needed.

The big salad bonus was a vanilla balsamic vinegar that Billy had mingling in his collection, which gave a very unique flavor to the simple ingredients.

To go with the salad Dar grilled everyone Ribeyes, and cauliflower was broiled with olive oil and salt until aldente.  It was perfection.

All in all the weekend was a great reprieve from the every day, and the perfect prelude to what will be a week of work, travel, and an actual vacation (I hope).   It’s also a week back to working out with a long anticipated and planned new playground in Charleston, so let’s get this all started.
